HIStory in Joshua and Judges

After the Pentateuch (first five books of the Bible), which contain both law and history, we get into the more historical books of Joshua and Judges. Joshua depicts a God who keeps His promises. They make it into the Promised Land, conquering people greater than themselves through God’s power. The book of Judges shows a people who keep breaking their promise to love, follow, and obey the Lord, and Him only, despite all He’s done for them. We read of what became a cycle for the Israelites. They turn from God. God disciplines them. They cry out for God. He sends a deliverer (a judge). They’re restored but after the death of that judge, they fall back into their old ways. And so, the cycle continued.

Joshua and Judges Show a God Who Remains Faithful to His Promises
Surely we can learn much through these books when we see them as HIStory rather than mere history. We have the same God who though “we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself” (2 Tim. 2:13).
