The book of Ruth recounts how God used her loyalty to her widowed mother-in-law, Naomi, to advance His plan of redemption. After the death of Naomi’s husband and two sons in the land of Moab, Naomi urged her daughter-in-laws to return to their homes. Ruth, however, refused, saying, “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” (Ruth 1:16) They returned to Israel where eventually Boaz became her kinsman-redeemer, restoring their family line. This ordinary, non-Jewish woman became the mother of Obed, the grandfather of King David. She is a part of Jesus’ genealogy (Matt. 1:1-17).
People would benefit from studying this book of the Bible to see God’s faithfulness in bringing good out of tragedy. He uses the ordinary to bring about His purposes. And, we see a foreshadow of Christ in this book who became the ultimate Redeemer.
