Isaiah Prophesies of the Coming Messiah

Considered a Major Prophet, due to the book’s size, Isaiah prophesied during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. Having begun his ministry with a vision of the glory of our holy God (Isa. 6), he was keenly aware of the effect of the people’s unfaithfulness to God. He foretold of their coming captivity due to their empty, rebellious, and idolatrous ways.

In the midst of pronounced judgment we read words of redemption through the Messiah who would one day come and take the punishment mankind deserved. — “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isa. 53:4-6) — Isaiah also prophesied that a day will come when this Savior returns as King to restore His kingdom among His people, thus predicting a future glory (Isa. 58-66).

Isaiah exhorts the people to turn back to the Lord. God promises, “my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (Isa. 55:6-11) We serve this same God today. We can cling to this Sovereign One whose thoughts and ways are higher than ours (Isa. 55:8-9). This is a message worth teaching.
