Romans, one of the Pauline Epistles, is packed full of doctrine about salvation with the Gospel being “the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes” (Rom. 1:16). We’re reminded of God’s righteousness and how we humans fall short of it (Rom. 3:23), making it impossible for us to save ourselves by trying to keep God’s law.
We read of God’s solution: Grace — “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Rom. 5:8) “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom. 6:23) — When we put our trust in Jesus, His righteousness is credited to our account for “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification” (Rom. 4).

The letter goes on to deal with how those are saved have been “set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness” (Rom. 6:18), possible as we live “according to the Spirit” (Rom. 8:4). We can become “more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Rom. 8:37). As His new covenant people, we offer ourselves as “a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God” rather than conform to the world (Rom. 12:1-2). This transforms not only our thinking but also how we relate to other believers (Rom. 12), including those who are weak in the faith (Rom. 14), and even governing authorities (Rom. 13) because “love is the fulfillment of the law” (Rom. 13:10).
