The Books of Psalms Shows God as Our Protector
Some people avoid teaching from the Psalms thinking they have little doctrinal merit. Yes, the psalmist often does deal with life’s struggles, many times exhibiting raw emotions. In the midst of it all, however, we also find much to teach about our Great God. Use the Psalms to show how He meets us where we are and comes alongside of us as our Rock, Shield, Fortress, Refuge, Stronghold, and more.

David, the writer of many of the psalms, concluded, “I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living” (Ps. 27:13). He then exhorted his readers to “Wait for the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord.” (Ps. 27:14). This is a message our students, young and old, need.

In addition, a number of the psalms point to Jesus who would come and suffer on our behalf so we can live eternally. These Messianic Psalms therefore point to God’s ultimate solution for this sin ridden world. Some of the psalms also teach us about God’s Word (specifically Psalm 19 and 119) … what it does, how it benefits us, what response it should generate within us. Surely “all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching …” (2 Tim. 3:16-17), which includes the Old Testament Poetic Book of Psalms.
